Mr. Richard “Dick” Wiedemann and Mrs. Marie (VanSplunder) Wiedemann are enjoying their 73rd wedding anniversary at their new home, Field of Dreams, in Allegany, New York.
The Wiedemanns were married on February 15, 1948 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Holland, New York. Marie Romanello, friend of the couple, and Robert Wiedemann, brother of the groom, attended the ceremony before a celebration took place at the Blossom Firehall.
Dick remembers how the two high school sweethearts met. He was a basketball player at Arcade School, and she was a cheerleader at Holland School. “I had a girlfriend at the time,” explains Dick, “but at a game between our two schools, Marie came up and just sat on my lap! I lost my girlfriend at the time, but I gained a partner for life.”
Marie reflects on the memory just as fondly as her husband. “I would jump in his lap all over again!” she says with a smile.
What’s the secret to staying together for 73 years? The happy couple admits they do not know, but they attribute the longevity of their relationship to their faith. “It must have been the Lord’s doing,” they agree.
Mr. and Mrs. Wiedemann were longtime residents of Chaffee, New York, and then spent 25 of their retirement years in Florida until their two children, Rebecca Rule of Freedom, New York, and Michael Wiedemann of Arcade, New York, beckoned them back home.
Together, the Wiedemann also have six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren! Congratulations, Dick and Marie! We look forward to sharing your continued health and happiness at Field of Dreams.
