The Magnolia at Frewsburg Rest Home July Look Back

July has certainly been a memorable month for our folks here at The Magnolia. With blessings of beautiful weather and plentiful days of sunshine, we took advantage of each opportunity to spend some much-needed time outdoors.

We began the month of July at The Magnolia, with a Fourth of July celebration in our pavilion with delicious Sahlen’s hot dogs, baked beans, potato chips, strawberry shortcake and iced tea and lemonade for refreshments. This was our first picnic in our pavilion this year, and although we were not able to spend the day with our families and friends like a typical celebration, we made the best out of the holiday regardless. We sang patriotic music ballads and shared many laughs with our friends and the staff that were present. We made sure to enjoy patriotic Popsicles and answer some tricky Independence Day trivia to keep our minds sharp!

One our favorite activities at The Magnolia is to celebrate the silly “daily holidays” that each day brings us. This month we decided to celebrate National Strawberry Sundae day the only appropriate way with a strawberry sundae social! We had delicious strawberry ice cream mixed
with frozen strawberries, and topped with strawberry sauce and whipped cream. Later that week, we also baked yummy blueberry muffins in honor of Blueberry Muffin Day, and had franks on the grill for National Hot Dog Day!

Our craft clubs are something we also really enjoy throughout the month. First, we made beautiful vases filled with authentic garden moss and tree branches from our own backyard to set the scene for the lovely faux butterflies we would place in them. These came together beautifully, and have become a part of our décor in our rooms and in our recreation room. Additionally, we were lucky enough to snag a tie-dye kit (they have been sold out EVERYWHERE this summer!) to make our own funky t-shirts. Each shirt turned out unique and totally different in comparison to the next. Our folks were extremely happy with how their project turned out!

Lastly, toward the end of the month we had our yearly Senior Olympics Week where we competed against other residents for the fight to win the gold! Our categories included Olympic Bingo, Bean Bag Toss, Ladder Ball and Lawn Chutes. Our lucky winners could place up to third place for each category, and was awarded a jar of Hershey’s Kisses, Reese’s Cups or Hershey’s Bars with a gold trophy on top. It was such a fun-filled week, we can’t wait to do it again next year!

We are very eager to get into the month of August, and enjoy the wonderful remaining weather while we can still enjoy it! We greatly miss our friends and family, and are very eager to be reacquainted soon!
